HOUSTON, Texas - Game one of the day started at 1 p.m with an 11-0 win over Mississippi Valley State as left fielder Montana Patin blasted a 2-run first inning home run and the Red Raiders never looked back.
Sarah Losleben picked up the win in the unofficial 6-inning game (by virtue of a time limit) with four strong innings in the circle. The junior right hander scattered two hits and struck out five in the effort. Sophomore Alex Watkins gave up no hits, struck out two and walked one in her two innings of relief.
Texas Tech continued its strong hitting display at the tournament with 11 hits, including a 2-for-2 performance with two runs scored and four RBI by junior second basemen Jennifer Bowers.
The second game of the day featured a sparkling performance on the diamond, by freshman pitcher Ashly Jacobs who went the complete six innings, allowing no runs while giving up only four hits to the University of Houston. The Red Raiders won, 2-0, however the game ended with Cougar runners at first and second and, in a strange call, the time limit expired mid inning.
Bowers' lead off home run in the fourth was the highlight blast of the game (and possibly the day) as the drive went deep to left field and took a limb off a tree (a small one) about 50 feet up the Ponderosa Pine. The Red Raiders added a run in the fifth when junior catcher Robyn Wike led off with a single, was replaced by freshman pinch runner Leah Legler, advanced to second on senior shortstop Heather Parker's walk and then scored on pinch hitter Patin's single an out later.
Jacobs was impressive in her complete-game debut, despite the confusing decision to end the game in the bottom of the Cougar's sixth after the leadoff batter had walked and the second batter had hit a single, getting out of a few jams, notably the fourth when she stranded a runner at third by striking out the final two batters of the frame.
Game three began six hours after game one, at 7 p.m. and featured a hard-fought battle with the University of North Texas. Texas Tech traded runs with the Mean Green for six innings when the time limit was instituted again in the sixth, this time at 9 p.m. with the score, 4-4. Three Tech pitchers combined, Rachel Wheeler, Megan Shupp and Losleben in the effort. Junior Jennifer Corkin provided some offensive highlights when the catcher went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI and the Red Raiders continued their flawless defense in the fall by committing no errors through four games.
Sunday's game schedule was cancelled because of rain in the area.
