
Third Annual Scarborough Specialties Open Comes to a Close

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech women's tennis wrapped up the third annual Scarborough Specialties Open today at the McLeod Tennis Center. The tourney began at 8 a.m. on Fri., Sept. 29, and concluded at approximately 6 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 30.
This year's field of participants included Texas Tech, Air Force, North Texas, Texas State, Abilene Christian, New Mexico State, and Texas-San Antonio. Abilene Christian captured victories in the red doubles and black doubles draws, respectively, and also in the grey singles draw. The grey singles draw is scheduled to be played between ACU's Sarah Drummond and Lana Pavlin in Abilene because of time restraints. Other team wins included Anne Fagegaltier from NMSU in the black singles draw and Natalie Wallin from UTSA in the red singles draw.
On the court this weekend for the Lady Raiders included Kerryn Potgieter, Samantha van der Drift, Anne Sophie Fankam, Brenna Jackson and Deanna Carrillo. Tech's No. 2 doubles team of Fankam and Jackson went 2-1 in the tournament, after receiving a first-round bye. The No. 3 doubles team, Potgieter and van der Drift, lost in the first round to UTSA moving into the consolation bracket. The duo went 1-2 overall, with their last scheduled match with UNT ending in a default. Tech's Deanna Carrillo teamed with Stacie Blair from UNT in doubles, capturing a win over UTSA in the first round, but fell to both ACU and Air Force.
In singles action, Fankam and Jackson worked their way in the black draw, with Fankam falling in the second round and Jackson in the third. Fankam went on to a consolation draw where she captured two victories over UNT and Texas State. Jackson's consolation match was against Megan Brown from ACU, were she lost 6-1, 6-3. Tech's Carrillo received a draw into the grey singles, capturing first and second round wins over TSU's Natalie McLeod and NMSU's Aleksa Costa. Carrillo fell in the semi-finals to Lana Pavlin from ACU, but quickly retaliated with win over Teri Wilkerson from NMSU.
The red draw included Potgieter, who fell in the third round, and van der Drift who lost in the first round. Potgieter went 2-2 in the tournament, winning over Lauren Wilson from Air Force and Anna Rofolomanantsiatosika from ACU. Van der Drift bounced back after her first round loss and worked her way through to win the consolation bracket, with wins over Lainy Chafitz from TSU, 6-2, 6-4, and Nicole Fintell from NMSU, 6-3, 6-3.
Playing in the 2006 ITA All-American Invitational in Pacific Palisades, Calif. this weekend was senior Lakann Wagley and junior Janet Durham. The duo lost in the first-round to Old Dominion.
