LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team kicked off its conference season on Friday at R.P. Fuller Stadium, however, the team was unable to come up with a win in its first time out against a Big 12 foe, dropping a 6-2 decision to Iowa State.
The Cyclones came out hot in the match, building an early 3-0 lead by scoring a trio of goals between the 11:53 and the 21:09 marks of the first half. The offensive flurry was lead by sophomore forward Erin Witte, who tallied the second and third ISU scores of the night for her first goals of the season.
In the game's 32nd minute, a hand ball by Cyclone goalkeeper Joanna Haig gave the Red Raiders a golden opportunity which they converted into their first goal of the evening. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Lothrop took a free kick from inside the ISU goal box that bounced off a Cyclone defender to forward Kim Cypert, who fired the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Iowa State's Leslie Hill drew the first points of the second half when she scored what would be her first of two goals on the night against Texas Tech goalkeeper Beth Lippert, who was making her third start in goal.
The Red Raiders fought back to cut the score to 4-2, as last season's leading scorer Priscilla Esquivel registered her first goal of the season, firing a shot from 15-yards out that found its way into the back of the net past a diving Haig.
Senior forward Amy Flores combined with Hill to give the Cyclones the final two goals of the night, helping ISU begin its conference schedule 1-0 and improve its overall record to 6-2. Texas Tech, meanwhile, falls to 1-8 on the season and 0-1 in Big 12 action.
The Red Raiders scheduled match on Sunday against Nebraska has been pushed back to Oct. 30, because of travel issues caused by Hurricane Rita. Texas Tech soccer will be in action next weekend when it travels to the state of Oklahoma to battle the Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowgirls in a pair of conference matches.
