Eight Red Raiders Earn All-Big 12 Baseball Honors

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - A total of eight Texas Tech baseball players have been named to various All-Big 12 teams for their outstanding performances on the diamond during the 2005 season.
Leading the way was senior shortstop Cameron Blair who was a consensus first-team All-Big 12 selection by the coaches, The Dallas Morning News and the Austin American Statesman. Blair accounted for the majority of the Red Raider offense in 2005 as he finished the regular-season with a .363 average along with a team-high 17 home runs, and 59 RBI.
Junior second baseman Joey Callender was also a top pick at second base as he earned first-team honors from the coaches and the Austin American-Statesman. Callender was the leading hitter for the Red Raiders during the regular-season with a .376 average while adding a team-best 15 doubles and was second with 48 RBI.
Junior first baseman Trey Stewart earned first-team honors from The Dallas Morning News as he finished with a .329 average during the conference season and was one of the league's top hitters. Senior third baseman Carey Avants picked up second-team All-Big 12 honors at third base from the Austin American-Statesman after finishing the year with a .342 average along with 37 RBI.
Seniors Cooper Fouts, Cody Fuller, and Tanner McElroy joined junior Billy Carnline on the honorable-mention All-Big 12 team from the coaches.
The 2005 Academic All-Big 12 was also released today and the Red Raiders placed Cody Fuller on the first-team and Tanner McElroy on the second-team.
Texas Tech opens play in the 2005 Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Tournament tonight at 8 p.m. against top-seeded Nebraska.
