LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's golf team was unable to make the push towards the top five at the Big 12 Championships in Trinity, Texas, finishing eighth overall with a score of 918 at the Whispering Pines Golf Club. The Red Raiders were led by senior Shaun Melville who finished tied for 18th carding a 227 performance.
Melville (75-79-73-227), who smashed his previous-best finish of tied for 47th with his 18th-place finish, was able to make a move into the top 20 with a third-round 73. Following the senior was junior Andrew Dresser (74-77-77-228) who finished tied for 22nd overall.
Rounding out the competing Red Raiders was junior Nicolas Allain (79-75-78-232) tied for 34th, sophomore Oscar Floren (73-79-83-235) tied for 42nd and junior Tyler Symons (77-82-81-240) tied for 53rd.
The No. 2 Oklahoma State Cowboys took home their fourth Big 12 title, first since 2000, shooting a tournament-low 868. The top three positions on the leaderboard never changed throughout the event as No. 34 Oklahoma (877) and No. 67 Missouri (885) round out second and third.
No. 13 Texas, shooting a 903, was able to recover from a hard first round to finish fourth after starting out tied for last. Taking the four through 10 places were, in order of finish, No. 42 Texas A&M (909), No. 35 Kansas (910), No. 49 Baylor (912), No. 27 Tech (918), Iowa State (921), No. 66 Kansas State (925), No. 72 Colorado (929) and Nebraska (931).
OU's Anthony Kim, the favorite to take home the title, finished atop the leaderboard. Kim, who finished second in last year's event, was able to take the title behind a score of 208 to be only one of three golfers to finish under par.
The Red Raiders will await a call form the NCAA selection committee this coming week to find out if they have qualified for their fourth-straight regional appearance in as many years. Overall the Red and Black have participated in six Regionals, and have made it to nationals in 2002 as their only appearance in the NCAA Championships.
The Red Raiders, if chosen, will probably be assigned to the Central Regional hosted in Southbend, Ind.
Next up for the Red Raiders will be The Maxwell hosted by Oklahoma in Ardmore, Okla., May 14-15. The event will mark the final competition for Tech before postseason play.
