LUBBOCK, Texas - Five College World Series teams from 2005 highlight Texas Tech's 2006 baseball schedule that was released today by head coach Larry Hays.
"I feel like we have a very competitive schedule and hopefully if we take care of our end we should have a pretty good RPI come tournament time," said head coach Larry Hays.
The Red Raiders will play a total of 32 home dates at Dan Law Field and will host three teams that advanced to the 2005 College World Series (Texas, Baylor and Arizona State). Texas Tech will host the defending national champion Texas Longhorns in a three-game series to kickoff Big 12 play March 17-19. Tech and Texas will open Big 12 play for the second-straight year and the Red Raiders will be looking to snap a two-year series losing streak against the Longhorns. The Baylor Bears come to Dan Law Field March 31-April 2 and Tech will try and extend its home win streak over the Bears as Baylor has not won a game here since 1998. The Red Raiders will jump out of Big 12 play on April 17 for a midweek match-up against the Arizona State Sun Devils. The Tech-ASU game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Red Raiders will face a total of five non-conference teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2005 including Rice, Tulane, St. John's, Oral Roberts and Arizona State. Texas Tech will open its 2006 schedule at home against Louisiana-Monroe Feb. 3-5 before heading to Houston for the Minute Maid College Classic. Tech will open the Minute Maid College Classic against perennial power Rice at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 before facing 2005 College World Series participant Tulane at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tech closes out tournament play with an 11 a.m. game against Houston on Sunday, Feb. 5.
Texas Tech will make its second appearance in the Rockhounds College Classic Feb. 23-25 at Citibank Ballpark in Midland. Tech will face off against Dallas Baptist on Thursday, Texas Arlington on Friday and Oral Roberts on Saturday. Tech captured the tournament title there in 2005 with a perfect 3-0 record.
Following the Rockhounds College Classic, Texas Tech will hit the road to face the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe in what will be the first of two games played between the two squads. Game time in Tempe is set for 8 p.m. (CT). The Red Raiders will head westward once again March 6-7 as they will take on the UNLV Rebels in a two-game midweek series in Las Vegas.
The 2006 season marks a total of five home Big 12 series for the Red Raiders as Tech will host Texas (March 17-19), Baylor (March 31-April 2), Kansas State (April 13-15), Oklahoma (April 21-23) and Missouri (May 12-14). The Big 12 Baseball Championships will be held at Bricktown Ballpark May 24-28 while the NCAA Tournament gets underway on June. 2.
