WACO, Texas - Senior midfielder Karen Stephens scored her first goal of the season early in the second half, but it was not enough to lift Texas Tech soccer to a victory on Friday as the Red Raiders fell to the Baylor Bears at Mays Field in Waco, Texas.
At the 12:02 mark of the first half, the Bears were able to tally the game's first goal. After a shot from Brittani Zonker was knocked out of the box by Tech goalkeeper Megan Knauss, the ball deflected to freshman midfielder Amanda McGrath who was able to send an arching shot over Knauss for the first tally of the evening.
Senior Tiffany Boshers extended the Baylor lead in the 17th minute as she maneuvered in the Tech zone and unleashed a low shot that found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Knauss was able to refocus and turned in a strong performance in the remainder of the first half, making five saves in the period to send the game to halftime with Baylor leading 2-0. Senior Beth Lippert replaced Knauss in goal at the start of the second half.
The Red Raiders opened the second half with a new sense of intensity and the team's play result in several opportunities for Tech deep in the Baylor offensive end.
In the 47th minute, the pressure resulted in the first corner kick of the night for the Red Raiders. On the play, senior Kimmie Davie found Stephens in the box and the Denton, Texas, native was able to convert on a one-touch pass for her first goal of the season.
Baylor was able withstand several other chances from the Red Raiders and were finally able to counter attack to score its third goal of the night at the 51:20 mark. The score was netted by McGrath for her second goal of the match.
Lippert was able to thwart several other scoring opportunities for the Bears in the second half and finished the match with six saves.
The loss drops Texas Tech overall record this season to 1-15 and 0-7 in conference play, while Baylor improves to 4-13 and 1-6 in Big 12 action.
