LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior goalkeeper Megan Knauss collected a career-high 12 saves, but was unable to lift Texas Tech soccer to a victory as the team fell to defending Big 12 Champion Kansas by a score of 4-0 on Friday at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
The Red Raiders were unable to get on the scoreboard offensively despite having strong efforts in the attaching zone by Priscilla Esquivel, Kimmie Davis and Jenna Wetzel. Each of the three players tallied a team-high three shots on goal and Esquivel gave Tech its best scoring chance of the night as she fired a shot that hit the crossbar mid-way through the second half.
The first score of the night came when Jayhawks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as senior Caroline Smith took a long pass from defender Afton Sauer and converted on a one-touch shot that eluded Knauss. The tally was the team-leading seventh of the season for Smith.
Kansas used several crisp passes to set up its next goal in the 34th minute as Lacey Novak and Emily Strinden were credited with assists when junior defender Holly Gault ripped a shot from 20 yards that found the back of the Tech net.
In the 39th minute, KU senior Kimberly notched the third Jayhawk goal of the half as she converted on a shot from 22-yards out.
Following the intermission break, the Red Raider defense was able to clamp down and hold the Jayhawks off the scoreboard until the 85th minute, when freshman Missy Geha was able to tack on KU's fourth goal of the night.
The loss drops Texas Tech overall record this season to 1-13 overall this season and 0-5 in league play, meanwhile Kansas improves to 8-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in Big 12 action.
The Red Raiders are back in action on Sunday when they host the Missouri Tigers at R.P. Fuller Stadium in a Noon match.
