Men's Golf Has Rough Start

LUBBOCK, Texas - The 36th-ranked men's golf team had a tough first day at the Central Regionals in West Lafayette, Ind., where the team ended the first round of competition in 23rd, 317. The Big 12 is dominating the 27-team field as it holds three out of the top four places with No.8 Oklahoma State (first), No. 47 Texas A&M (second) and No.9 Texas (fourth).
Oscar Floren, freshman, leads the Red Raiders with a three-over-par 75 day one performance. Floren currently sits in a tie for 34th-place entering round two. Sitting in a tie for 88th, senior Brad Jacobson is Tech's second highest finisher. Jacobson shot an eight-over-par 80 with one birdie on hole No.8.
Two Red Raiders, Chris Pace and William Haddrell stand in a tie for 99th entering tomorrows round. Junior Chris Pace shot even-par for most of the day but was plagued by two bogeys early in holes No.8 and No.13. Pace recovered to finish nine-over-par 79. Haddrell hit a two-stroke bogey at hole No.13, but recovered four holes later to shot his first birdie of the tournament. Haddrell also finished nine-over, 79.
Sophomore Dresser rounds out the last of the Tech golfers. Dresser began play with a solid start staying at even-par until hole No.16 where Dresser shot his first birdie. Entering the next hole Dresser was one-under before taking a five-stroke bogey at hole No.17. Dresser ended the day ten-over-par 82.
The Red Raiders will enter the second round of play 15 strokes out of the top 10, and will need to make up ground on the competition if they plan on taking Tech to its second NCAA Championship appearance. The top 10 teams from every region (East, Central, West) will move on to the championships June 1-4 in Hot Springs, Va.

The Red Raiders will begin the second day of their quest for the championships with a 12:18 a.m. start tomorrow. Tech will play 18 holes on each of the remaining two days of competition at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex (7,259 yards, Par 72). The 54-hole event will wrap up play on May 22.
