Szumanski Advances to Quarterfinals of ITA Regionals

LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore Bojan Szumanski advanced to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA South Central Championships today in Austin, Texas, as the Red Raiders concluded the second day of competition.

In the men's open singles, Szumanski defeated Alex Skrypko (SMU), 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 32. Szumanski, a native of Opole, Poland, handed Mohamed Dakki (Texas A&M), a 6-2, 6-2, defeat in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. Senior Esat Tanik won in the round of 32 by defeating Michal Kokta (Baylor), 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, but fell in the round of 16 to Jerry Makowski (Texas A&M), 7-6, 6-1. Sophomore Dimitrio Martinez was defeated by Henrik Soderberg (SMU), 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, in the round of 32.

Senior Michael Innerebner defeated Niels Buksik (Texas-Arlington), 7-6, 6-3, in the third round of the consolation singles bracket and then beat Olivier Steil (Texas-Pan American), 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. Freshman Adrian Prpic won two matches today in the consolation sinlges bracket beating Kyle Mims (Texas-Arlington), 6-1, 6-1, and then Juan Pable Alatorre (Lamar), 6-2, 6-2, to advance. Also competing on the consolation side was sophomore Teddy DiBlasi who beat Gonzalo Figuereido (Texas A&M-CC), 6-2, 6-3, and Dennis Andrade (Texas-San Antonio), 6-2, 6-3, to also advance to the consolation quarterfinals. Senior Ryan Vogl fell to Oscar Castenada (Texas State), 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, Innerebner and Szumanski defeated Pierre Cantu and Nik Porter (Texas-Pan American), 8-2, in the round of 32. Their round of 16 match was postponed until Sunday.
