Texas Tech Softball Completes First Day of Fall Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas - The first day of the Texas Tech softball tournament has been completed with the Lady Raiders winning two of their games and tying the last game. The Lady Raiders out scored their opponents 16-2. There were two homeruns for the day as Brandy Moulin and Heather Parker both sent balls soaring over the outfield fence. All four pitchers made an appearance during the day, pitching at least three innings for the Lady Raiders and all but one Tech batter posted a hit.
Game 1: Texas Tech vs. Panhandle
Both teams got off to a slow start as the Panhandle Aggies put up their only three hits in the first four innings. The Lady Raiders began getting hits and scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Montana Patin placed a hit down the right side line putting runners on first and second. Freshman Jennifer Bowers got a hit to centerfield scoring freshman Devin Zaragosa then lead-off hitter sophomore Ashley Parker reached first by an error by the pitcher. Sophomore Natalie Kula then reached by an error by right field and allowed Patin and Bowers to score.
The Aggies were not able to respond but the Lady Raiders kept putting scores on the board. In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Brandy Moulin homered one out to centerfield scoring Heather Parker and freshman Jennifer Corkin making the score 6-0. The Lady Raiders were able to put up two more runs bringing the final score to 8-0. Due to the hour and a half time limit and the eight run rule after five innings for tournament play, the game ended in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Raiders put up eight hits and won 8-0.
Game 2: Texas Tech vs. Dodge City
The Lady Raiders put a young team on the field with every position filled by a freshman except for sophomores Ashley Parker, Heather Parker and Kula and junior Erin Crawford at pitcher. The Lady Raiders began their scoring drive when Heather Parker smashed a homerun over the fence in left center in the second inning. Tech put five more runs on the board that inning as freshman Whitney Riley hit a double scoring one and a triple from Patin scoring two.
Dodge City was not able to score until the fourth inning when they put up one run. The Lady Raiders put their last run up in the fifth inning when Kula was batted in by Ashley Parker who drilled one up the middle.
The game ended after the top of the sixth due to the time limit for the tournament. The Lady Raiders had seven hits and won 7-1.
Game 3: Texas Tech vs. Eastern
The Lady Raiders played solid defense allowing only one run to score in the top of the seventh. For Tech, senior Natalie Enderlin scored lead-off hitter Zaragosa putting the only run on the board for the game in the first inning. Eastern responded in the seventh by scoring one run. The game was a defensive battle as Eastern had seven hits and Tech had five hits but neither team was able to put more than one run on the board.
The game ended with a tie after seven innings of play.
