LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head women's tennis coach Cari Groce has announced the hiring of Majorie Terburgh as the new assistant women's tennis coach for the Lady Raiders.
Terburgh comes to Tech after playing two seasons (2000-02) at Texas A&M. She graduated from Texas A&M in 2003 with a degree in Kinesiology. During the 2003 season, she was a student coach for the Aggies as she finished her degree.
"I am very excited to be a part of Texas Tech tennis," said Terburgh. "It is a new challenge for me. After I finished playing tennis at Texas A&M, I knew that I wanted to get back into tennis and I wanted to stay in Texas. This is the perfect situation for me. Working with Cari will also be a good learning experience, as she is a great coach and I will learn so much from her."
While at A&M, Terburgh compiled a 44-23 overall record in singles play, including a team second-best record of 24-8, including 10-1 in the Big 12, in 2000-01. As a junior, she earned the coveted Aggie Heart Award. Terburgh helped Texas A&M to a 23-6 record her senior year, while the team finished the season ranked No. 22 in the country.
Prior to her years at Texas A&M, Terburgh was a two-time Junior College All-American at Tyler Junior College. She was the nation's No.1-ranked JUCO singles player and No. 3-ranked doubles player. Her team captured the National Championship during both her seasons at TJC.
The Bloemfontein, South Africa, native played No. 1 in high school at Oranje Meisieskool. Terburgh won state championships four years in a row. She was ranked in the top 20 in the 16s and was in the top five in the 18s. Terburgh was also ranked No. 5 in singles in South Africa.
"I am thrilled to have Majorie join our staff at Texas Tech," said Groce. "She brings a lot with her as she has played in the Big 12. She knows all the teams in the conference and has the experience of playing those teams. Majorie is an extremely driven and hard worker. Our personalities work well together. Our players will benefit from her playing experience, as well as her energy and motivation."
