NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the sixth and one in the fourth to take a 4-1 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the first game of a three-game series on Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
The Red Raiders (26-21; 7-14) had plenty of chances to take a big lead in the game but Tech stranded seven runners, including six in scoring position, in the first six innings of the game.
Senior right-handed pitcher Nathan Fouts held Oklahoma to just one hit over 6 2/3 innings before the Sooners got a two-out RBI double from Matt Bose, and RBI singles from Spencer Wyman and Russell Raley to give OU a 3-0 lead.
Texas Tech finally got on the board in the top of the seventh but not in the conventional manner. Sophomore Cody Fuller laced a double the left-center field gap and then moved to third on a fly out to right field by T.J. Bruce. Fuller scored Tech's first run of the game on a balk call on OU pitcher Mark Roberts to make the score 3-1 in Oklahoma's favor.
Oklahoma added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead.
The Red Raiders tried to rally in the top of the ninth as Tech loaded the bases with two outs. Sooner reliever Jarod McAuliff ended the game when he struckout Brent Fossum on an inside slider.
Nathan Fouts suffered the loss for Texas Tech despite allowing just seven hits over 7 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Mark Roberts earned the win Oklahoma as he pitched seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits.
Texas Tech and Oklahoma will play again on Saturday afternoon as the two teams square off at 2 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
