The Lady Raiders Complete Day One of Cougar Fall Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team completed day one of the Cougar Fall Classic in Houston. The Lady Raiders finished the day with three wins and two losses in singles play and in doubles play the team also finished with three wins and two losses.

In flight "J" of singles competition, Lakann Wagley bested her opponent Ashley Touche of North Texas, 6-2, 6-0. Katja Kovacic won her match against Katherine Harris, also of North Texas, 6-0, 6-4 in flight "F" and Iva Gyurgin defeated her opponent, Katie Westbrook of Louisiana Tech, 6-1, 6-3 to round out flight "H". Tara Browning and Hristiyana Gocheva both lost their matches in the singles competition.

In doubles play, the Lady Raider duo of Tara Browning and Katja Kovacic defeated Lucille Kleynhans and Monica Penon of Arizona State in round one of flight "C", 8-1. In the same flight, Lakann Wagley paired up with Zuzana Krchnakova of Baylor to knock off Megan Schmulback and Katherine Harris of North Texas, 8-4. In round two of flight "D", Hristiyana Gocheva and Iva Gyurgina fell to Avril Martinez and Saharai Uriarte of Louisiana Tech, 8-5.

Wagley and Krchnakova defeated Browning and Kovacic in the semifinals round of the doubles competition and will compete on Saturday in the finals for doubles. Browning and Kovacic along with Gyurgina and Gocheva will compete for third and fourth place in the doubles round tomorrow as well.

The Cougar Fall Classic will continue through tomorrow and conclude on Sunday, Oct. 5.
