The Lady Raiders Compete Strong in Day Two of Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raiders concluded the second day of tournament play in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the Air Force Academy Invitational. The team walked away with several victories in doubles and singles play, as well as a few defeats.

In doubles play, the Lady Raiders suffered one defeat with sophomore Tara Browning and freshman Hristiyana Gocheva losing to Marissa Mecham and Rachel Sackmaster (DU), 8-6. Sophomore Katja Kovacic and freshman Lakann Wagley defeated Beth Messaros and Stephanie Ginsburg (DU), 8-6, while freshman Iva Gyurgina teamed up with Crystal Knysh (DU) to defeat Andrea House and Megan Williams (WYO), 8-1, to round out the second day of doubles play.

In singles action, the Lady Raiders also saw much success. In flight one, Browning and Wagley both won their first matches, but lost each of their second. Browning and Wagley will compete against each other tomorrow for third place. In flight three, Kovacic and Gyurgina both lost their first matches, but won each of their second. Kovacic and Gyurgina will also compete against each other for fifth place. In flight four, Gocheva lost her first match to Andrea House (WYO), 6-4, 6-2, but won her match against Allison Lui (MS), 6-4, 6-1, for third place.

"I think they competed well today in both singles and doubles," stated head coach Cari Groce. "Some of the girls were disappointed they lost, but they will get better and better, and in the long run, it will pay off."

The Air Force Academy Invitational will conclude tomorrow, Oct. 12 with the final matches in both doubles and singles.
