LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior third baseman Doug Beck went 5-for-5 with five RBI and one run scored to pace Texas Tech to an 11-2 win over the Texas Tech Alumni Team on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,629 fans at Dan Law Field.
"It was so much fun being out here again," said former All-American and Cleveland Indians catcher Josh Bard. "This team showed good defense and they are pretty quick and showed they can pitch so I think this will be another good year for the Red Raiders. Coach Hays will have them ready to go as he always does."
The 2003 Texas Tech Alumni team consisted of former Red Raider players who are currently on professional rosters throughout the United States. The roster included former All-Americans and Major Leaguer's Josh Bard (Cleveland Indians) and Travis Driskill (Baltimore Orioles).
"It was awesome to be back out here and put on the Double T," said Stubby Clapp, former All-American and current member of the Atlanta Braves organization. "I had chills going down my back all afternoon with this great crowd and being around all this great tradition. It was a lot of fun."
Texas Tech threatened in the bottom of the first on back-to-back hits by Scooter Jordan and Doug Beck but the Alumni Team ended the rally on a lineout by Travis McElroy and a strikeout by Jason Pasma.
The Red Raiders got on the board in the bottom of the third when Travis McElroy brought home Brent Fossum on an infield groundout to give Tech a 1-0 lead. Fossum delivered a one-out hit and Scooter Jordan followed with a walk before Doug Beck loaded the bases with a single down the third base line.
The Alumni Team got on the board when second baseman Stubby Clapp tagged Tech reliever Brock Johns with a two-out triple and Joe Dillon brought him home on a single up the middle.
Tech retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Red Raiders rattled off three runs to take a 4-1 lead. T.J. Bruce picked up his first hit of the game and scored Madison Edwards on a double to left-center. Alumni Team reliever Steve Rowe walked the next two batters and Doug Beck took advantage as he brought in two runs on his third hit of the game.
The Red Raiders put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the sixth as the squad put up three runs on four hits to take an 8-1 lead. After surrendering four more runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Alumni Team got on the board in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Joe Dillon.
Junior Steve Gooch picked up the win for Texas Tech as he was the pitcher of record in the first inning. The Red Raiders threw nine different pitchers (one every inning) on the afternoon.
Texas Tech will open the 2003 season with a three-game home series with New Mexico beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 at Dan Law Field. Tech will host the Lobos again on Saturday at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
