Post Game Quotes
TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH LARRY HAYS
"We were very fortunate to beat a good team and an outstanding pitcher. That guy pitched well and fielded his position well. He made a lot of good plays. We had about four negatives that we got awaywith, and you don't usually get away with that. When Smitty's ball didn't go out, I thought the stars were against us. But this is a huge win for us."
"I thougt we pitched pretty well. Both pitchers made about one mistake. The thing about Gooch -- he gave up, what seven or eight hits -- they only hit one hard. There were a couple of bloopers. Gooch threw really well. And Rowe got it going after a couple of outs. Those guys can hit."
(on playing Rice) "We're playing another good team. I don't think they lose a lot here. It's us against the world, and it'll be interesting to see how we handle it."
TEXAS TECH PLAYER JON SLACK
(on his game-winning hit) "The ball had very good movement on it all night long. [Kohn] was throwing a fastball that started over the plate, and the catcher would catch it one or two inches off the plate. With that type of movement and control, the umpire calls the pitches. When I came up in the ninth, I had a game plan, since he'd been pitching me away, away, I scooted up to take away the inside pitch. Fortunately, I got a good piece of it. The baseball gods were with me tonight. I just did what I could and hit the ball hard."
TEXAS TECH WINNING PITCHER STEVE ROWE
(on giving up the game-tying home run) "I knew we had the last at-bat. After that pitch, I knew he got good wood on it -- I didn't know it would go out of the ballpark. I didn't do my job, didn't keep the lead, but I realized as soon as the ball came down that it was still a tie ballgame. Oncethat pitch was over, that at-bat was over, I just wanted to give our bats a chance to win the game. I was pleased with how I did that; it just took me a while."
WASHINGTON HEAD COACH KEN KNUTSON
"I thought this was a great college baseball game. It was fitting of an opening game of a regional and pretty well played. It was great competition and great competing by both ball clubs."
"Shawn Kohn is out best guy and we wanted to keep him out there as long as we could. I felt like the matchup tonight was pretty good. He's pitched well for us all year, and it was a close ball game but the Huskies lost, so we'll come back and get them (Harvard) tomorrow."
