Columbia, Mo. - A rain filled morning caused the 6th Annual Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be delayed for almost four hours Friday at Audrey J. Walton Track-Soccer Stadium in Columbia, Mo.
When the meet finally got underway redshirt freshman Jason Young threw his way into fourth place in the hammer throw with a toss of 186 feet 10 inches. Young's throw put Tech into a tie for third place after one event with five points.
The women stand alone in fifth after sophomore Bridgett Tidwell placed seventh and set a new personal record in the 10,000-meter run.
"I thought she did really good and stayed tough throughout the race," commented Texas Tech distance coach Dave Smith. "[The leaders] broke her with about a mile to go, but she fought off the girl from A&M five times in the final 200 meters, and the Baylor girl for the final three laps."
With three laps to go in the race the battle for seventh-ninth was fierce. Tidwell would not let Baylor's Candice Kolb pass her for the entire lap and eventually Kolb would fall back. The race was not over though, as Texas A&M's Mary Bonn would fight the Crawford, Texas, native for 150 of the final 200 meters.
"I was thinking that I finished ninth at indoors," said Tidwell. "I didn't want to miss placing in conference again."
Over the final 50 meters she put an end to Bonn's charge, sprinting to the finish line with a time of 35:56.14.
In the decathlon, Olavi Paavo stands in eighth place with five events scored and five more to follow on Saturday. Paavo was in 10th after the first event of the day, the 100-meter dash, and moved as high as fourth after scoring 868 points in the high jump.
Bliss Williams pulled out of the heptathlon after one event when she touched the hurdle with her hand and got zero points for the event.
