DALLAS, Texas - Baylor sophomore ace Markus Hornung of Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Texas Tech soph star Kendall Brooks of Corpus Christi, Texas, have been chosen as final Big Conference Tennis Players of the Week for matches played from Apr. 15-21, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Horning scored the decisive singles point to help the Bears finish the 2002 campaign undefeated in conference dual match play with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Texas A&M's stellar Lester Cook and a 4-3 team win. That triumph also propelled BU to the Big 12 men's championship with a 7-0 league record. Hornung closed the regular season with a 31-9 record in singles and teamed with Nathan McGregor for a 11-3 record in No. 1 doubles.
Brooks upended Ines Furtmayr of Oklahoma State 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 in split sets as the Lady Raiders finished the pre-tournament portion of the season at 9-12 overall and 4-7 in Big 12 play. She scored the go-ahead point a week earlier with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 singles win over Baylor's Paola Stephen to help Tech pull a 5-2 team upset in Lubbock, Texas, over the conference's No. 4 finisher.
Both standouts now advance to the Apr. 25-28 Big 12 Tennis Tournaments at College Station, Texas.
