Five Red Raiders Receive Big 12 Academic Honors

Texas Tech's Kendall Brooks and Barbara Schraml were named to the first team, while Noel Ruiz was selected to the second team for the women. On the men's side, Royce Ramey was named to the first team and Ben Gudzelak received second team honors.
Special recognition goes to six student-athletes who were nominated with a 4.0 grade point average, either cumulative or the two previous semesters. On the women's side the 4.0 student-athletes are Linda Faltynkova and Dominika Olszewska of Oklahoma State, Rebekah Forney of Texas, and Schraml of Texas Tech. The men's 4.0 student-athletes include Fran Krepelka of Oklahoma State and Ramey of Texas Tech.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the tennis academic all-league squads consisted of 44 first-team members with 14 on the second-team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while the second-team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her/his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
Many of these student-athletes will be in competition at the sixth Big 12 Conference Women's and Men's Tennis Tournament, April 25-28 at the Texas A&M Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. In Big 12 tourney play, Texas' women are the five-time defending champions, and have won all 14 of their league tennis tournaments entered, which includes the Southwest Conference tourneys from 1988-96. The Longhorns will enter the tournament No. 1 seed after winning the Big 12 regular season with a 11-0 league record.
Texas A&M is two time defending Big 12 men's tennis tournament champion. The Aggies also won the 1998 men's tournament. Texas won the other two tourneys in 1997 and 1999. Baylor is the 2002 Big 12 men's tennis champion by posting a 7-0 record in league competition. The Bears enter the event No. 1 seed.
