
Women's Tennis Falls to Jayhawks, 4-3

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team completed its first competition of a five-game road trip in Lawrence, Kan., earlier today. The Red Raiders started off strong in singles play but could not carry the momentum as they dropped a 4-3 decision to Big 12 rival Kansas.
The Red Raiders opened singles play winning the first three matches with sophomore Irina Tereschenko at the No. 1 position dealing a loss to Jayhawk's Cheryl Mallaiah, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Co-captain Alenka Ovin defeated Emily Haylock of KU, 6-3, 6-4 (10-2) at the No. 2 position and teammate Beverly Dawson overcame a second match loss to defeat KU's Paige Brown at the No. 3 position, 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-3.
In doubles action, Tech's No. 1 tandem of Tereschenko and Dawson won the only doubles match defeating the KU's sister team of Courtney and Kristen Steinbock, 8-4. Red Raiders Noel Ruiz and Barbara Schraml fell to KU's Brown and Haylock, 8-2, at the No. 2 doubles position and teammates Ovin and Kendall Brooks were defeated by KU's Mallaiah and Aurelie Bejar, 8-4.
The women's tennis team will take on the Missouri Tigers at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at the Green Tennis Center in Columbus, Mo.
