Tech's Kelly Johnson Selected AVCA All-Central Region

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore Kelly Johnson was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for her play during the 2002 season Wednesday morning, as she was selected to the AVCA All-Central Region first team.
"This is awesome," said the Fort Worth, Texas, native upon learning of her award. "This has made my day. I don't even know what to say, this is great. I am very happy to have been honored with this award, but I know that I couldn't have done it without my coaches and teammates. They are a wonderful group and a lot of the credit goes to them."
"Kelly has really had a great season," commented head volleyball coach Jeff Nelson. "She has really worked hard this year and it shows. She has started to become a premier player and is very deserving of this award."
This most recent honor is just the latest in a series of awards for Johnson in 2002. Already this year, she was selected first team All-Big 12, Verizon Academic All-America third team, Big 12 Player of the Week and Academic All-Big 12.
With the award, Johnson becomes the 10th Red Raider to earn AVCA first team All-Region honors and is eligible for AVCA All-America honors to be issued later next week. The last time Tech had an All-Region first team member was in 2000 when Melissa McGehee and Colleen Smith received the award.
