LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's Kelly Johnson was voted to the All-Big 12 first team Sunday evening, announced by the league office. The award is the second post-season Big 12 award of Johnson's career after being named Newcomer of the Year in 2001.
"I am very excited to receive this award," commented the Fort Worth, Texas, native late Sunday night. "Although this award is given to an individual, there is no way that I could have done it with out being surrounded by a great coaching staff and wonderful teammates."
Johnson becomes the sixth Red Raider to be named to the All-Big 12 first team and first since Melissa McGehee and Colleen Smith received the honor in 2000.
The 5-foot-10 outside hitter continues to rack up honors in 2002 as she was named Big 12 Player of the Week for her efforts the week of Nov. 3, Verizon Academic All-American third team, Academic All-Big 12 first team, as well as to the Four Points Sheraton/Red Raider Classic Tournament team.
"I am very happy for her," said head volleyball coach Jeff Nelson. "She had an outstanding season this year and I feel like she has really developed into one of the premier players in the Big 12 Conference. She is definitely deserving of this honor."
