
Red Raiders lose a heartbreaker to Kansas 2-1

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's soccer team led for 76 minutes of play in a back and forth match against the Kansas Jayhwaks, but allowed the winning goal in the final minute of play to lose, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at R. P Fuller Stadium.
Michaela Roberts (San Antonio, Texas) scored her second goal of the season for the Red Raiders (2-20, 0-4 Big 12) in a defensive first half, which saw the Jayhawks out shoot Tech by a slim, 3-2, margin. Robert's goal came in the 22nd minute, when she took a pass from freshman midfielder Karen Stephens (Denton, Texas) and scored pass Kansas' Meghan Miller.
Kansas (8-2-2, 2-2-2 Big 12) came out in the second half and put the pressure on Tech, out shooting the Red Raiders 12-2 as Tech pulled back to protect the one goal lead. Beth Lippert (Woodinville, Wash.) held strong for Tech as she made nine saves in the matches to bring her total on the season to 52. The Jayhwaks finally broke through in the 76th minute as Brianna Valento headed a corner kick into the net to knot the score at 1. After Roxanne Frilot (Albuquerque, N. M.) received her second yellow card of the match, the Red Raiders were forced to play short handed for the remainder of the match, and the team finally yielded the game-winning goal in the 89th and final minute of play.
Texas Tech will be on the road next weekend as they travel to Austin, Texas, to battle the Texas Longhorns on Oct. 11 and to College Station, Texas, to face the Texas A&M Aggies on Oct. 13.
