LUBBOCK, Texas - The Sept. 24th edition of The NCAA News released its 2001 softball attendance rankings, listing Texas Tech 24th among Division I schools, drawing 5,430 last season.
The total ranked sixth in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Baylor, but Tech's softball coach expects to see that figure rise with the addition of seats and more home venues this season.
"With the talent of the teams that are scheduled to play here this season I fully expect that total to rise dramatically," Reeves said. Along with more games Reeves plans to have mid-week games played in the evening to allow for students and the community the opportunity to attend the games.
"A large crowd adds to the atmosphere and gives us a distinct home-field advantage," Reeves stated. "I'd like to see The Rock full every game and there is not a bad seat in the house."
Rocky Johnson Field officially holds 586, but space was made available behind the outfield fences to accommodate bleachers that could be brought in, as well as lawn seating behind the dugouts.
"If we can fill the stadium consistently we will need to add the outfield seats permanently, and within the next five years we will compete for one of the top attendance figures in the nation," Reeves went on to say.
Arizona toped the list with a total attendance of 46,499, or 2.134 per home game. Fresno State, Arizona State, Oklahoma and Alabama round out the top five. Oklahoma led the Big 12 drawing 13,324 last season, followed by Texas, sixth, Texas A&M, ninth, Nebraska, 20th, and Baylor who ranked 21st.
