HOUSTON, Texas - The Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Brandon Roberson of Texas Tech University.
Roberson was signed on May 27 and will report to the Astros' short-season Class A affiliate in Pittsfield, Mass. He is from Aledo, Texas, and led the Red Raiders with 13 victories this spring (13-3 record). Roberson recorded a 4.18 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 116.1 innings pitched in 2001.
Roberson was a fifth-year senior who was eligible to be signed as a free agent since he was not selected by a Major League club in last year's draft. Per Major League rules, undrafted players who are fifth-year seniors or junior college players previously drafted and under the club's control can be signed as late as one week before the Major League Draft, with this year's deadline falling on Tuesday, May 29.
The Astros and the 29 other Major League clubs will participate in the 2001 Major League First-Year Player Draft on June 5-6.
