Tech Track Runs at Big 12 Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Leigh Daniel picked up another victory at her final conference championships this weekend, winning the women's 10,000 meter run to lead the Texas Tech track and field squad at the Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas.
Daniel won the 10000m in 35:18.39, good for 10 points for the Tech women's squad.
The women's 4x100-meter relay squad set another school record, posting a third-place time of 44.35.
The Tech women also had Tiffany Green qualify for event finals in both the 100 and 200m, posting 11.44 in the 100 for first place in her heat, and 23.24 in the 200 prelims.
Three Tech women had impressive preliminary times in the 400m, with freshman Rachelle Evans leading the way at 55.31. Melonie Barrow ran 55.41 and Ngozi Iwu posted a time of 56.66.
Freshman D'Andria Brigham had a time of 1:03.29 in the 400m hurdle prelims, as well, her second fastest time in the hurdles this season.
For the Red Raider men, Olavi Paavo finished third in the decathlon after leading after the first day. Paavo won the high jump with a mark of 6-11, and the discus with a mark of 143-3, and took second in the long jump to finish the two-day event with 7263 points, his highest point total of the year.
Freshman Saidric Williams qualified for event finals in both the 100 and 200m with times of 10.27 in the 100 and 21.05 in the 200. His time in the 100 was good enough to win the heat.
Ryan Luna picked up eight points for the Red Raiders with a second-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 215-2 on Saturday. Mike Beasley and Paavo also scored for Tech in the men's high jump, both clearing 6-10.75 for fifth and sixth, respectively.
JR Holder also had an impressive showing in the 200m prelims, posting a time of 21.37, while senior Antonio Franklin had a time of 47.97 in the 400m prelims.
Ryan Curry took eighth in the discus with a mark of 173-3, good for one point for the Tech team.
All of the other running event finals were to take place late Saturday afternoon and evening, concluding the fifth conference outdoor track and field championships.
