LUBBOCK, Texas - Two individuals and one relay team, all women, will represent Texas Tech at next week's NCAA Track and Field Championships on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., May 30-June 2.
Senior Leigh Daniel qualified in the 5000 and 10000m runs, while freshman Tiffany Green will compete in both the 100 and 200m races after winning both events at last week's Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas. Green set school records in both events this season, including a mark of 22.98 in the 200 last week, as well.
Also running at the national meet will be the women's 4x100-meter relay squad of junior Monique Wright-Cruse, senior Tami Zachary, freshman Rachelle Evans and Green. The relay team set a new school record at the conference championships last week, posting a time of 44.35 for third place in the meet, breaking the old record by 0.64 seconds.
The relay team will begin its quest for a national title on Wednesday, May 30, with semifinals heats beginning at 5 p.m. PT. Green will run in 200m semifinals at 6:55 p.m. that evening.
The following day Green will be in the 100m trials that start at 5:30 p.m., while Daniel looks for her second 10000 national title at 7:50 p.m. that evening after winning the event at the 1999 national meet in Boise, Idaho.
The 4x100-meter finals are Friday, June 1, at 5 p.m., while the 100m semifinals begin at 5:45 p.m. that day.
The final day of competition holds both the 100 (5:45 p.m.) and the 200m (6:30 p.m.) finals, as well as the 5000 race at 7 p.m.
The NCAA Championships are comprised of only the top 20-24 runners in each event and 11-13 relay teams from around the nation. Each outdoor meet counts as a qualifier for the national meet, with qualifying standards set forth by the NCAA that must be met for individuals and teams to be considered for competition.
