Williams, Green Lead Tech at UTEP Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field squad participated in the ShoeSpring/Audiovox/ UTEP Invitational and City Championship Saturday in El Paso, Texas, with freshmen Saidric Williams and Tiffany Green leading the way for the Red Raiders in the one-day competition.
Williams took third in the men's 100 meters with a time of 10.25, the fastest for a Tech male this year in the event.
Also for the men, Dwayne Benoit took second in the 1500m with a time of 4:02.86, while teammates David Leigh and Joseph McCellon finished fourth and fifth in the event, respectively.
The Tech men ran 3:19.35 in the 4x400-meter relay, the fastest time this season for the squad, and Mike Beasley jumped 6-8 in the high jump. Ryan Curry also came in third in the discus throw with a mark of 168-0.
For the Red Raider women, Green came in seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 11.68, while Tami Zachary finished fifth in the same event in 11.58. Green took eighth in the 200m with a time of 24.14, while Zachary ran 24.36 in the 200.
Rachelle Evans and Ashley Mitchell posted times of 57.78 and 59.71, respectively, for fifth and sixth places in the 400m, while Tracie Akerhielm came in second in the 1500 in 4:45.38.
In the field events, Megan Schuessler finished second in the shot put with a mark of 43-7. Tracy Anderson and Schuessler finished third and fourth, respectively, in the discus throw with marks of 148-1 and 143-6.
The Tech track squad will split up next week, with a handful of members traveling to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., with the rest of the squad competing at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas.
