Women's Tennis Swings into Action

The Texas Tech women's tennis squad will begin its 2001 campaign this weekend in the ACU Ladies Indoor Invitational on Fri., Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. and will conclude play Sat., Jan. 27.
The Red Raiders take-on Oral Roberts to start the tourney on Friday at 11:30 a.m. on the ACU campus, and will battle Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6 p.m. at the Abilene Country Club. To conclude the tournament, play will resume on Saturday at the Abilene Country Club against North Texas.
All matches will begin with doubles and then proceed into the six singles matches.
"We have a lot of newcomers to our team this year, but still expect to win," said coach Virginia Brown. "This weekend will be a good test for our team. We did well in the fall and hope to continue on pace."
Tech has six newcomers and five returning players to the squad including four freshmen, five sophomores, one junior and one senior.
The Red Raiders received a pre-season ranking of 13th in the Southwest Region. Two players received a ranking in individuals, senior co-captain Alenka Ovin is ranked 27th and transfer sophomore Barbara Schraml is ranked 30th.
