COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas Tech and Texas A&M met in an afternoon doubleheader Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex in College Station. The stakes were high for both teams as each needed at least one win to secure a spot in the Big 12 tournament. Tech came away with a split, losing the first game 2-1 and winning the second game 8-1.
The stakes were high and it showed in the play of both teams. The first game was a pitching dual between Tech's Amanda Renfro and the TAMU's Amy Vining. Both teams were scoreless going into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Aggies scored as a result of a Tech error to make the score 1-0.
Texas Tech answered in the top of the sixth to tie the score. With runners on second and third, Paula Workman hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to bring in Sandy Butler and even the score at 1-1.
The game went into the eighth with the score tied. Tech was unable to score in the top of the inning. Texas A&M came up and put runners on first and second with two outs. Kelly Ferguson stepped in and hit a ball into right field. Selena Collins made a run from second for the Aggies and turned the corner with a full head of steam. Tech rightfielder Amanda Douglas threw a rocket on target to the plate but Collins executed a slide just out of the reach of Tech catcher Kristi Tunnell. A&M came away with the 2-1 victory.
Game to was a totally different story as the Red Raiders pummeled the Aggies by an 8-1 count. Amanda Renfro took the hill again for Tech and shutdown the Aggies, holding them to four hits. Meanwhile the Texas Tech lineup collected 12 hits, tying a season high. Amanda Douglas collected three hits and a pair of RBI. Tamara Harringotn and Sandy Butler also notched multiple hit games and the Red Raiders scored four runs in the first and another four in the fifth to square away the game.
