
Texas Tech Falls To Rice, 5-2

HOUSTON (AP) - Kenny Baugh, the Western Conference pitcher of the year, struck out eight and walked two while leading second-seeded Rice past third-seeded Texas Tech 5-2 on Friday in a first-round NCAA game. Rice (41-21) will play at 4 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday's game between Princeton and Houston. The losers will play at noon Saturday in an elimination game.
Baugh (12-2) pitched his eighth complete game of the season. He gave up nine hits, all singles _ four by the Red Raiders' Chaz Eiguren.
Brett Smith led off the first with a single and scored on Jason Gray's home run to right center as Rice took a 2-0 lead. Texas Tech tied the game on RBI singles from David o'Keefe in the fourth and Eiguren in the fifth.
Eric Arnold's solo homer to left gave the Owls the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Rice added an insurance run in the sixth when catcher john Lukin reached on a two-base throwing error by third baseman David O'Keefe and scored on Jayme Sperring's single to center.
Sperring's rbi single in the eighth accounted for the Owls' fifth run.
Keith Tracy (9-7) went the distance for the Red Raiders, giving up 11 hits.
