After holding off the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday afternoon, the Texas Tech baseball team split an afternoon doubleheader in Ames. Tech dropped the opener 6-5 and won the final game of the series 5-3. Texas Tech stands alone in the third in the conference with a 11-7 record and are 22-17 overall.
In game one, Texas Tech and Iowa State went back-and-forth until the Cyclones scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. The Red Raiders threatened with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but Iowa State came right back in the bottom half of the inning with three of their own to win 6-3.
Starting pitcher Cory Metzler suffered his second loss of the season after going 5.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. At the plate, Mark Austry lead the way going 3-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. For the series, the senior was 6-10 with two doubles, a home run and two RBI.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Red Raiders score first on Austry's second home run of the season in the top of the second. After the Cyclones scored two in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 3-1, Texas Tech answered with three in the top of eighth to take the 5-3 for good.
In the eighth, Tech loaded the bases with a Shaun Larkin single and back-to-back walks to Chaz Eiguren and Cory Sellars. Marco Cunningham hit the first pitch from Cyclone reliever Josh Twedt to the right centerfield gap to clear the bases and give Tech the win and the series.
Kevin Tracey earned his fourth win of the season with his fifth complete game. The right-hander allowed three runs on 10 hits, three walks and four strikeouts over nine innings of work. Tracey also saved the game on Saturday.
Larkin and Austry lead the Red Raiders with 2-4 afternoons. Both scored a run and Austry made a number of outstanding defensive plays at first base. Cunningham's triple was his only hit in four at bats and he finished the day with three RBI.
