LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field teams hosted their only home meet of the season today when they hosted the Red Raider Outdoor Invitational at R.P. Fuller Stadium. Both teams fared well competing against teams from Southwest Texas University, Odessa College, Ranger College and South Plains College.
Leading the way for Tech's men was Jason Young. The freshman discus thrower from Dallas took first place in the discus event with a mark of 56.50 meters (185'-04"). The mark was good enough to earn a NCAA provisional qualifying berth. It is the second time in as many weeks that Young has earned such a distinction.
Elsewhere for the men, the 4x100-meter relay team took first place with a time of 40.92 seconds. That time was just .92 seconds shy of a provisional qualifying time. Ty Williams finished first in both the hammer throw (179'-11") and shot put (57'-01"). Ryan Luna took home a first place finish in the javelin with a distance of 196'-0" to give the Tech men a clean sweep of the throwing events.
Also on the women's side, Sherri Coleman took home a first place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.70 and Bobbi Crill won the pole Vault with a vault of 11'-3.75".
Next weekend the men and women travel to Philadelphia, Penn. for the annual Penn Relays, one of the nation's most prestigious track and field events.
