LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team opened up its Big 12 season with a 5-0 win over the No. 18 Oklahoma State Cowgirls Saturday afternoon at the Texas Tech Recreational Intramural Field. Texas Tech (12-24, 1-0 Big 12) used a solid pitching performance from Amada Renfro (9-13) and three RBI from Amanda Douglas to get the win. Oklahoma State falls to 23-11(0-1) with the loss.
Tech struck first in the third inning. With two outs Eva Harshman hit a single into centerfield. OSU pitcher Lauren Bay (8-7) walked the next two Red Raider batters to load the bases. Douglas then stepped to the plate and hit a single just past the reach of second baseman Lezli Leathers to score two runners. Tech added another run in the inning to make the score 3-0.
Renfro (7 IP, 4H, 0R) got into a jam in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out Cowgirl catcher Ryan Realmuto stepped to the plate and hit a hard grounder back at the pitcher. Renfro fielded it and threw home for the force and Tech catcher Kristi Tunnell threw over to first to get Realmuto in a 1-2-3 double-play to end the threat.
Tech added two more runs in the second. Amanda Douglas hit a one-out double to right field to score Sandy Butler from second base and Paula Workman doubled to score Douglas in the next at-bat, making the score 5-0.
The two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock.
