Women's Tennis Concludes Play at Houston Fall Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team concluded play at the University of Houston Fall Classic Saturday, with the Red Raiders competing for titles in four different flights of play.
Sonnia Orellano was the only Tech player to win in the finals of her flight, defeating Mariana Barrios of Tulsa, 6-3, 6-4, to win Flight #4. Orellano defeated Kendall Exelby of UTEP, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, earlier in the day to reach the finals.
Also advancing to flight finals were Alenka Ovin (Flight #1), Stephanie Mueller (Flight #3), and the doubles team of Kendall Brooks and Beverly Dawson (Flight #1).
Ovin picked up a victory Saturday morning against Chrissie Terrill of SMU, 6-3, 6-4. She lost to Jocelyn Hogan of Southwest Texas State, 6-1, 6-1, before dropping the flight final to Tulsa's Jennifer DeSpain, 6-4, 7-6.
Barbara Schraml, Kendall Brooks and Dana Giles also competed in Flight #1 for Tech, with Schraml defeating Jana Perkova of UTEP, 6-4, 7-6 (7-0), before losing to DeSpain, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Brooks was defeated by Terrill, 6-3, 6-3, in the sixth-place match, while Giles suffered a 6-1, 6-2 defeat to Perkova.
Flight #2 had Brooks picking up a win over Houston's Kailey Meisinger, 6-4, 7-5. Noel Ruiz also defeated Sarah Tritt of Southwest Texas State, 6-3, 7-5.
In Flight #3, Dawson lost to UT-San Antonio's Eva Soderkvist, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and to Katie Pruett of SMU, 6-0, 6-2, in the third-place match.
Stephanie Mueller defeated Dione Gonzalez of UTEP, 6-2, 7-6, (7-5), but later lost to Houston's Sarah Flood, 6-3, 6-2, in the Flight #5 championship.
In doubles, Brooks and Dawson lost 8-1 to DeSpain and Jana Sedivec of Tulsa in the Flight #1 title match. Ovin and Schraml picked up a win in the flight, winning 8-1 over Tritt and Sara Convery from Southwest Texas State.
Orellano and Ruiz were defeated 8-4 in the third-place match by Tulsa's Barrios and Marjolein van Dongen in Flight #2. Giles and Mueller won 8-6 in Flight #3 over a combined team from SMU and Southwest Texas State.
