Tech Announces 2001 Softball Schedule

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head softball coach Bobby Reeves announced the 2000 schedule Wednesday, with games against nine NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago, including defending national champion Oklahoma.
Texas Tech will open the season in its new home park on February 3 with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against New Mexico State. The opening games will be the first of nine home dates for the Red Raiders in 2001.
The Red Raiders will take part in Arizona State-hosted Fiesta Bowl Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., February 9-11. Tech will face 2000 College World Series participant Washington, as well as NCAA Tournament entries Utah and Oregon at the Rose Montford Complex in Phoenix.
Tech will travel to Norman, Okla., to play in the OU Adidas Classic, February 16-18. Opponents in Norman include Creighton, UT-San Antonio, Tulsa, Wichita State and defending national champion Oklahoma.
The Red Raiders will also participate in the Lady Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., where they will take on Notre Dame, Maine and Arkansas, and the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla., which includes games against Utah, Temple, Mississippi State, Michigan State and Georgia Southern. Tech will also play in the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif.
Conference action begins March 24-25 with a trip to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State. The Red Raiders play Texas A&M (March 28), Kansas (April 7-8), Oklahoma (April 13-14) and Iowa State (April 28-29) at home in Big 12 play. They also make trips to Nebraska, Baylor, Missouri and Texas.
The Big 12 Conference Tournament will once again be played at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla., May 9-12.
First-year head coach Bobby Reeves returns six starters from last year's squad, including seniors Sandy Butler, Amanda Renfro and Shauna Briggs. Butler and Renfro have played in 319 career played between them.
Reeves has also added nine newcomers to this year's team, including three transfers and six freshmen. The first-year coach compiled a 35-24 record last season as the head coach at Southwest Texas State, including victories over 22nd-ranked Illinois-Chicago and 16th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette. His team also defeated Texas twice in 2000.
