LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's and women's track and field teams will compete on Saturday, April 17, at the LSU Alumni Gold Relays in Baton Rouge, La. Field events will get underway at noon, while track events will start at approximately 2 p.m.
The Red Raiders will be taking both a full men's and women's team to compete against athletes from Alabama-Birmingham, Kentucky, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Meridian Community College, Nicholls State, Northeast La., Northern Iowa, Northwestern State, Oral Roberts, South Florida, Southeastern La., Southern Miss., Tulane, New Orleans and USL.
Among those from Texas Tech to watch will be Shameron Turner (Dallas, Texas). During the indoor season, the sophomore competed at the NCAA championships in the 200 meter dash and as a member of the 4X400 relay team. He is scheduled to compete in the 200 meters and possibly on a relay team this weekend.
For the women, Ngozi Iwu (Houston, Texas) has continued to improve on her 400 meter times this season. Iwu, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in the event during the indoor season, should have a chance to qualify this weekend for the NCAA outdoor championships to be held June 2-5 in Boise Idaho.
"After taking last weekend off our men and women should be in top form for this weekend's competition," Director of Track and Field Greg Sholars said. "There will be many of the top teams in the nation will be competing at the meet this weekend. This should push our student-athletes to post many season best and NCAA qualifying marks."
