LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's and women's track teams will compete on Saturday, March 20, at the Texas Opener Meet at Mike Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The two teams will challenge against student-athletes from Texas, UT-Arlington, Houston, Southern Methodist and UT-San Antonio. Illinois will compete in the men's events only. For both Texas Tech teams, it will be their first outdoor competition of the season. Director of Track and Field Greg Sholars decided to have both teams not participate last weekend at the Arlington Invitational due to cold weather conditions.
The Opener is the first-ever track and field meet to be held in the new Mike A. Myers Stadium located at the University of Texas.
Field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the men's hammer and women's javelin and conclude with the women's shot put and men's discus at 4 p.m. Running events will begin at 1 p.m. with the men's steeplechase and end with the men's and women's 4X400 meter relay at 4:05 p.m. Texas Tech is bringing a full squad for both teams to the Opener.
"After bad weather conditions stopped us from competing last weekend, we are glad to finally have a chance to begin our outdoor season," Sholars said. "It has been a long wait for many of our student-athletes to have a chance to compete since the conclusion of the indoor season. It will be exciting to have our teams at the first meet in the new stadium. I think our men and women have really looked forward to opening the outdoor season and will be ready to post some great performances."
