LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's annual Red-Black spring football game, sponsored by Texas Tech Medical Center, is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. in Jones Stadium. The game will feature the teams only full contact scrimmage of the spring season as well as an audience of almost 100 former Red Raider lettermen.
The game will feature four 12-minute quarters and a 15-minute halftime that will feature a public transfer of the Masked Rider reigns and a performance by members of the Goin Band from Raiderland. Last year's Masked Rider, Dusty Abney, will lead the Red Team onto the field to open the game, while the 1999-2000 rider, Travis Thorne (Stanley, N.M.), will lead the Black Team onto the field to open the second half.
Throughout the second half, there will be a number of prize giveaways and an autograph session with current and former players and coaches will follow the game on the Jones Stadium turf.
"Our team really looks forward to the Red-Black game," said Spike Dykes. "Having a lot of the former players back and all the promotions and hoopla associated with the game gives the players and coaches a chance to have a little fun during the spring season. We limit the amount of contact during the spring to try to limit the number of injuries to our players, so this game is the first and only chance for a lot of the guys to let it all hang out and show what they can do - especially the younger players. I hope we have a lot of people come out to watch and have a good time."
A total reunion-type of weekend was planned for this years Red-Black game. A Friday afternoon golf tournament for former lettermen and athletic department staff and coaches is scheduled at Meadowbrook Golf Course that will be followed by dinner catered by Outback Steakhouse. Following the game on Saturday, a private bar-b-que lunch will be held for the team, football staff and former lettermen.
