Texas Tech Vs. UTEPSept 5, 1998Post-Game QuotesTexas TechCoach Dykes: "Quantity is not as good as quality. We had a nice win. We respect UTEPs Defense. Their offense did what they needed to stay in the game. Our offense finally came alive. It was neat what they did after Rob got hurt. Matt did a great job. The sad thing about the game was that we werent very consistent. We had lots of stupid penalties especially the celebration one. Our player need to know that we cant do the same thing(regarding penalties) as in the years past. Nearly 40 minutes of flawless defense and we broke down. We didnt have many injuries except for Rob. We are looking at one to three weeks with him--hopefully only one."
On the crowd and Raider Vision: "I thought we had the best crowd. Diamond Vision played a big part of it.. Great Crowd. We are off to a start and have a lot of work to do."
Ricky Williams: "I am very tired. We got a lot going that was a good game. This was a team effort. The offensive line picked it up. This was a very importan win for us going into next week. North Texas is a game we want to win.."
On Sophmore Jinx: "This is just the first game. You never know what can happen. I think it was just the flow of the game. Coach told me to bring my shoes with me and I did. We put them to the test."
Matt Tittle: "It has been a long time since I played. I forgot how sore you get. But I was happy with the chance. I had a lot of energy and wasnt that nervous. I had a lot of energy and was ready to go."
Donnie Hart: "Definitely, we knew UTEP would put up a great fight. They did a great job staying in it. They put us to the test especially in the first quarter."
On Matts Performance: " Well you know--when it comes to practice- Rob and Matt are pretty much the same guy. Matt is a senior and he knew what he had to do. He has been around. We have got 10 more to go and hopefully the same results each time."
Coach Bailey: "At halftime we were hanging in there. We pretty much shot down their running game. In the 2nd half--they wore us down and we didnt adjust well to situations. We got some big plays but were never consistent with anything. The whole key to the game was that they wore us down in the second half. The big turning point in the second half was when Jimmy Carpenter fumbled the ball and gave them good field position. That was a big up for them and a big down for us. From that point on things got ugly. The longer the game went on--the better they got and the worse we got. This football team is not that bad of a team--we have to go back and condition ourselves right and we have to go into next game without mental mistakes."
John Rayburn: "I think we missed a lot of opportunities but we had some big plays. They did exactly what we expected them to do. They did exactly what they did last year. We just didnt capitalize on the opportunities we had."
On Techs Defense: "Both the ends are very good football players. Darwin Brown is a very good cover guy. We definitely didnt quit. We kind of knew it was a little bit shaky but not as bad as it was. We have to get ready for next week because it doesnt get any easier from now on."
