San Jose, CA -
The Texas Tech softball team began a week long tour of California with a stop in San Jose for the NSIT (National Softball Invitational Tournament). After posting wins over #23 Iowa and San Jose State, the Red Raiders grabbed the number one seed in pool A and will play California at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
The Red Raiders (17-16) came into the tournament with a season record of 15-15 and were looking to build upon a two-game win steak that they started against New Mexico State on Wednesday.
In game-one, Tech faced national power and 23rd ranked Iowa. The Hawkeyes came into the game with a 8-4 overall record. The Red Raiders took control early behind the pitching of sophomore Amanda Renfro who struckout ten batters while giving up just three hits against a hot hitting Hawkeye offensive battery. Tech jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Jenny Kohlers left field single scored first basemen Tamra Harrington. The Raiders would get three more runs to bring the final score to 4-0.
In game-two versus the Phoenix of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Tech once again struggled offensively as they were held to a season low one hit on 22 at-bats. The Phoenix got seven hits off senior pitcher Emily Hayes and cruised to a 3-0 shutout.
Game three pitted Tech against host San Jose State. The Spartans came into the game with an 8-19 season record but couldnt get the bats swinging against Tech pitcher Amanda Renfro. Renfro, returning from a 10 strikeout game against the University of Iowa, allowed just two hits and struckout eight batters. Tech used a seven hit performance to drop the Spartans 3-1.
"We finally got things going in game-two against San Jose State," said Tech head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie. I was pleased with our performance on both sides of the ball."
