FRESNO, CA - The Texas Tech softball team behind the pitching of sophomore Amanda Renfro upset second-seeded South Carolina in the schools first NCAA tournament appearance.
Amanda Renfro, a sophomore from Houston, threw her first career perfect game in a 1-0 shutout of 14th ranked and second-seeded South Carolina. Renfro dished out eight strikeouts while giving up no hits and no walks.
"We knew going in that if we could get a good game out of Amanda, we would have the opportunity to do good things," said Tech head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie. " Amanda really stepped it up tonight and I think she proved to a lot of people how good she really is. We beat a really good team in South Carolina."
Texas Tech (34-29) was playing its 33rd game this season against a ranked opponent and its 55th game of the season on the road. In the second inning, the Red Raiders seemed to have put themselves in scoring position by loading the bases with two outs. However, senior rightfielder Stephanie Walls wasnt able to connect and the score remained tied at zero . In the top of the fifth, senior slugger Kim Martinez brought in the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to leftfield that scored Stephanie Walls.
The Red Raider defense accounted for 21 putouts and five assists on the evening. Texas Tech will face the University of the Pacific tomorrow night at 7:30. The Tigers upset fourth-seeded Stanford in earlier action 6-5. The Red Raiders are 2-0 against Pacific this season. Tech defeated the Tigers 1-0, 8-0 back on March 15 in Stockton, California.
