LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team announced their 2001 recruiting class, today, with the signing of five players that are expected to play a vital role next season.
"We were able to get a top-level class and we are really excited about that," said head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie. "We got kids that we think will be able to fill some holes that will be vacated by our seniors this season."
For the second straight year, Gillispie has expanded her recruiting base by nabbing three of four players from outside the State of Texas. Leading off this year's recruiting class is Kacey Davis from Kingsbury, Calif. Davis, a catcher from San Joaquin Memorial High School, was a first team All-League selection in 1998 and 1999 while leading her team to the Southern Section CIF Championship in 1997 and 1998 and the League Championship in 1997, 1998 and 1999. She was named team captain in 1999 and has been an All-League Academic selection for the past three years. In ASA (Amateur Softball Association) competition, Davis has played for the ASA 18-Under Gold, American Pastime, for the past two years while advancing to two National Tournaments.
Emily Bone, an infielder from Yukon, Okla., has been a three-year starter at Yukon High School. Bone was named All-City and All-Metro Conference in 1998 and Metro Conference Newcomer of the Year in 1997. In 1997, Bone led the Yukon High Millerettes to the Oklahoma Class 6A State Championship.
The third recruit in the 2001 class is Andrea Joachim from Vancouver, Wash. Joachim, former teammate of current Tech freshman Lynsey Haij, is Tech's second highly touted recruit from the State of Washington. Lynsey Haij, also from Vancouver, Wash., signed with the Red Raiders last season and is expected to make an impact on the team this year. Joachim was an All-State selection in 1999 while leading Central Catholic High School to the 1999 State Championship. In ASA competition, Joachim made two national tournament appearances with the Washington Aphis.
Britney Stolle, an infielder from Round Rock, Texas, will bring offensive firepower to the team next season. Stolle, winner of the Round Rock High School Big Bat Award in 1997 and 1999, will bring a .376 batting average to the Red Raider lineup. Stolle helped lead Round Rock High School to the Bi-District and Area Championship in 1999 while being named a first team All-Central Texas pick.
Rounding out the 2001 recruiting class is Tracy Cartier from Austin, Texas. Cartier, a centerfielder from James Bowie High School, will add to the depth in the outfield. Cartier was the MVP of District 14-5A and a first team All-Centex pick in 1999. In 1998, she was named first team All-Centex and first team All-District 25-5A. In ASA competition, Tracy played with the Silver Travelers of Texas.
