Texas Tech Volleyball Defeats Iowa State

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech registered its first Big 12 victory of the season as it defeated Iowa State 15-10, 15-11, 15-5 Saturday at Lubbock's Coronado High School. The victory improves Texas Tech to 11-7 overall and 1-5 in the Big 12 while Iowa State drops to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in the Big 12.
Three Red Raiders reached double figures in kills. Junior Colleen Smith tied a career-high for kills with 19. The six-foot-seven junior hit .294 (19-9-34) for the match and tallied eight digs and three blocks. Freshman Ann Romjue also notched big numbers with 17 kills, a .300 hitting percentage (17-5-40), 11 digs and five total blocks. Sophomore Yolanda Cumbess finished with 12 kills in 25 attempts along with five blocks. Senior Lori Garber came close to a triple-double as she finished with eight kills, 10 digs and seven blocks.
Texas Tech outhit Iowa State .257 (61-26-136) to .061 (28-21-155). The Red Raiders jumped out in front and earned a 15-10 win in game one. The Cyclones battled back to take a commanding 9-5 lead in game two but Tech rallied behind several Smith and Cumbess kills to go up 11-10 and win 15-11.
Texas Tech head coach Jeff Nelson has never lost to the Cyclones and is 7-0 against Iowa State.
Iowa State was led by Sheila Lopez' and Stacy Nicks' seven kills apiece.
The Red Raiders are next in action when they travel to Baylor Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start.
