LUBBOCK, Texas - For the second time in two weeks, the Texas Tech Red Raiders upset a ranked opponent by defeating No. 7 Texas A&M 1-0 at R. P. Fuller Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Red Raiders improve to 7-6-1 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 action, while the Aggies fall to 10-4 and 4-3 in the conference.
Sophomore forward Carrie Graham kicked the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the goal on a pass from junior defender Kelly Taylor just 10 minutes into the game to give the Red Raiders the 1-0 lead.
Later in the match, Texas A&M had a few opportunities to score but Tech?s sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Peese tallied a couple critical saves. Peese played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves. It was Peese?s fourth shut out of the year.
In a very physical match, Tech outshot A&M 14-12, including six shots-on-goal to the Aggies? three. Texas A&M recorded seven corner kicks to the Red Raiders? one.
?Our players deserved this win,? said head coach Felix Oskam. ?We played well Friday and today. These girls played their hearts out and it was a very good win for our program. We played a 3-5-2 today because that is what A&M plays and we did a very good job of it. It was the first time we had played it and you would have thought we had played it all season long.?
Texas Tech will travel to Oklahoma State Friday, Oct. 15 for a 7 p.m. game and then to Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 17 for a 1 p.m. game.
