Wes Bloomquist joined the Texas Tech Athletics Department in September 2018 and is the Director of Athletic Communications for men’s basketball.
In his role at Texas Tech, Bloomquist serves as the primary media relations contact for the men’s basketball program and head coach Grant McCasland. During his time at Tech, the Red Raiders have advanced to four NCAA Men's Basketball Tournaments, including reaching the 2019 NCAA National Championship Final and the 2022 Sweet 16. The run to the 2019 Final Four also included promotion of the program's first Big 12 Championship.
Bloomquist arrived in Lubbock after eight years of athletic communications experience at Angelo State University and the University of Texas at Tyler. At UT Tyler, Bloomquist was the sports information director for all Patriot programs and also an adjunct professor where he taught sports communication. In the sports information role, he led communication efforts for all 17 athletic programs and covered five national championship runs and promoted over 30 all-America selections. At Angelo State, Bloomquist worked with baseball, men's basketball, golf, volleyball, soccer and football in roles that included media relations, sports information, social media, video and broadcast.
Prior to working in athletic communications, Bloomquist gained sports journalism experience as a sports writer at The Victoria Advocate in south Texas after two years at the Duncan Banner in Oklahoma. He has also contributed as a freelance writer for the Austin American-Statesman and The Williamson County Sun after covering UT Tyler athletics as a student sports writer for The Patriot Talon. His various roles have afforded him the opportunity to cover athletic events and at all levels over the past 20 years.
A Georgetown, Texas native, Bloomquist earned his bachelor’s degree in Journalism from UT Tyler in 2005 before a master’s degree in Communication from Angelo State University. He is a CoSIDA member and has been honored by the organization with seven CoSIDA Fred Stabley Sr. writing awards for player feature writing, game reporting and general feature writing.
