On June 2, 2016, head coach Candi Whitaker announced the addition of Brittney Martin to the Lady Raider basketball staff as a graduate assistant.
Martin, the 2016 Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year out of Oklahoma State, played for Whitaker during her freshman year when Whitaker was Associate Head Coach for the Cowgirls.
"Brittney was an exceptional player at Oklahoma State and in the Big 12 conference," Whitaker said. "Her playing career, experiences, and familiarity with the conference will be invaluable to our team. Having coached Brittney I know the quality of person and work ethic we are getting and can't be more excited for her to join our staff."
Martin was the only Big 12 player last season to average a double-double and led the conference in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 20.4 points and 11.3 boards. She topped the conference in average minutes played (36.9) and steals (2.9) in addition to her 19 double-doubles.
She was also the only player to average a double-double in Big 12 play with league-game highs of 18.4 points and 11.4 rebounds along with 2.7 steals and 38.4 minutes played. She tallied double-doubles in 13 of the 18 conference games. Martin picked up a season-high five Big 12 Player of the Week awards. Her 35 points at Missouri State were the most in an individual game this season.
Throughout her career, Martin was a three-time All-American and three-time All-Big 12 selection, twice unanimous. She collected eight Big 12 Player of the Week honors and was a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection.
"I am so excited to take the next step in my life," Martin said. "I'm looking forward to working for the Texas Tech women's basketball program under one of the great coaches in Coach Whitaker. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and I can't wait to get started."
Martin was the 25th overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft, selected by the San Antonio Stars, before deciding she wanted to pursue a coaching career.
