Broke the all-time College Home Run Derby record with 52 home runs while finishing runner-up in the event on July 3, 2014 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, in front of 22,352 fans and a national television audience on ESPN ... hit 15 home runs in the opening round and hit 19 home runs in the second round (34 total) before crushing 18 home runs in the final round ... previous record for homers in the derby was 20 by Rice's Michael Aquino in 2013 ... all 52 home runs were hit to either left field (18), left-center field (16) or down the left-field line (2) ... 29 homers traveled at least 400 feet while nine of his 18 home runs in the final round went at least 400 feet ... all five of his final homers were at least 410 feet ... furthest home run hit went 446 feet landing on the concourse over the left field wall for his 25th home run of the contest (10th HR of the semifinal round) ... 50th home run hit went 411 feet into the seats beyond the left-field fence with nine outs in the championship round ... his father, Rigo Gutierrez, threw pitches to him in the contest ... was runner-up to Texas catcher, and high school (Sharyland HS) teammate, Tres Barrera.
