Tech bounces back against Wolfpack

Red Raiders defeat Nevada behind strong performance by Kenna McKenzie
SACRAMENTO, California – The Red Raiders (3-2) defeated Nevada (0-5) on Saturday afternoon after avoiding the reverse sweep to clinch a 3-2 win.
Kenna McKenzie led all scorers with 23 kills, matching her career-high, while a late surge by Tatum Johnson gave her a career-high 10 kills. Both attackers hit over .400 for the match as well. Shelby Ignash again tied her career-high for kills with nine while Sara Bowcutt added eight kills and 10 digs as both players were named to the all-tournament team.
Taylor Cook had a double-double with 26 assists and 11 digs as Maddie Smotherman led the team with 16 digs behind Emily Contreras who had 12 digs and three aces. Katelyn Cochran finished the match with 18 assists and eight digs as well.
The first set opened up all Wolfpack as they took an early 5-2 lead before the Red Raiders got into a groove. The lead switched to 18-17 Red Raiders forcing a Wolfpack timeout. Tech went on a 7-2 run to clinch the first set as McKenzie finished with eight kills in the first set.
The Red Raiders took the early lead in set two, going up 9-4 as McKenzie continued to torch the defense. The Wolfpack cut into the lead as the set went on but Tech remained in the lead and then rode an 8-2 lead to take the second set behind another strong set by McKenzie coupled with some nice swings by Bowcutt and Ignash.
Tech entered the third set out-hitting Nevada .352 to .132 thanks to just five attack errors and seven blocks. The Wolfpack went on a late 4-0 run to take a 19-17 lead, forcing a Red Raider timeout. Nevada hung on behind a .302 hitting percentage to force a fourth set, winning 25-22.
An 8-5 early lead by Tech forced a timeout by the Wolfpack. Johnson gave the team a boost with some kills and her blocking ability as the Red Raiders tried to close out the match. The set was back-and-forth as Nevada hit 15 first, taking a one-point lead. The Wolfpack held onto their lead and won 25-23 to force a fifth set.
Texas Tech took complete control of the fifth set as Cochran walked it off with an ace to secure the team's third win of the season.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will play their home opener on Thursday against UTRGV as part of the Red Raider Classic.
